Academy players featured strongly in Wednesday's Pontins Reserve Cup defeat at Northampton, the second cup defeat City has suffered this season at the hands of The Cobblers. Seven Academy players were in the starting line up but it was a former Academy player and former FONCY player of the season Jason Shackell who opened the scoring at Sixfields when he headed home an Ian Henderson corner. Damian Batt was unlucky not to double City's lead when he saw a header well saved by Town keeper Lee Harper. Two goals in five minutes from Tom Smith and Marc Richards shortly before the break saw Northampton lead at the interval. Keith Webb change things around after the break and it paid dividends on 78 minutes after some good build up play involving Adam Smith and Keith Briggs allowed Lee Blackburn to turn the ball in from close range at the far post. |

City's joy was short lived however when Town got the decisive goal just two minutes later. The lively Derek Asamoah caught the City rear guard flat footed to race clear and beat Paul Crichton. | |
