Martin Leads City To Win

NORWICH CITY UNDER 18's 2 CHARLTON ATHLETIC UNDER 18's 0

City's Academy game against Charlton at Colney had to be delayed for 30 minutes after The Addicks' team bus had problems at their Sparrows Lane training ground.

The fact that kick-off was put back to 12:30pm had little effect on the Canaries who cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win, although in fairness to the visitors they did field something of a young side.

With Matthew Halliday sidelined with the knee injury he collected against West Ham the previous week and Michael Spillane named as a substitute for the first team again against Watford, David Williams named Lee Howlett and Adam Gusterson as his central defensive pairing.

City got the game off to a perfect start, taking the lead after just three minutes.

Bally Smart

Bally Smart had a hand in the second goal
Jamie Eames worked his way into a good position on the right flank and when he crossed the ball in there was Chris Martin to meet the ball on the volley and blast it into the roof of the net with Charlton's keeper Joe Wooley well beaten.

City continued to push forward and might have extended their lead when the quick thinking Seb Muddel latched onto a loose ball out of defence but his first touch was too heavy and Wooley was quick off his line to collect the ball.

Martin was involved in most things for City and he sent in a delightful far post cross that might have seen City increase their lead had Bally Smart been alert to the chance.

They didn't have to wait much longer to get the second goal however when a move involving four players on 27 minutes saw City double their advantage.
Martin found himself on the edge of the box and rolled the ball to Eames who sent in a cross to Smart at the far post. This time Smart headed the ball back into the danger area where Seb Muddel fired the ball in off the inside of the upright.

Charlton might have reduced the arrears shortly after the break when Scott Wagstaff was just inches away from a left wing cross. It was however one of the few moments when Charlton worried the City rearguard.

Back at the other end Martin should have done better with a shot over the bar after some good work by Smart, although Martin did go close moments later when he forced Wooley into a good save.

Charlton introduced all three substitues, but it was all to no avail as The Canaries notched up their first win of 2006.
