After dominating the game for long periods, City's Academy Under-18 side came away from Charlton's Sparrows Lane training ground empty-handed after the home side sneaked in the winning goal just four minutes before time. All this came after City had opened the scoring but were later pegged back after the home side had been awarded a hotly deputed penalty. With David Williams on Welsh Under-21 duty in France it was Academy Manager Ricky Martin at the helm, however he was without several of his regular players. Rossi Jarvis, Michael Spillane were joined by Chris Martin as they travelled to QPR with Nigel Worthington's first team. Also missing from the squad were Joe Lewis and Andrew Cave-Brown who both picked up injuries during Wednesday's Reserve Team draw against Leicester City at Carrow Road. |

From the first whistle Bally Smart was causing the Charlton defence plenty of problems with his electric pace, and with just 16 minutes on the clock he was instrumental in creating the opening for City's goal. Smart picked the ball up on the right wing before beating his man and cutting inside to unleash a powerful drive that Mads Nielson did well to parry, but with the ball falling to Asmat El Ouargui the City striker wasted little time in hitting the back of the net with a low drive. Alistair John was proving to be a bit of a handful for the City rearguard and it was he who created an opening for Grant Basey to try his luck and it needed a smart save from Stephen Arnold as the ball took a slight deflection. |

At the other end Smart was still causing havoc and Nielson took no chances with another stinging shot from the South African, this time turning the ball over the crossbar. City might have then gone two up when a delightful curling effort from Andrew Fisk just grazed the outside of the upright. With 35 minutes on the clock Charlton drew level from the penalty spot after John took a dramatic tumble under the referee's nose when Adam Gusterson made the slightest of contacts. Myles Weston converted from the spot. City suffered a further blow shortly before the break when Fisk was forced to come off with a knee injury. The game continued in much the same mode after the break with Smart sending in a low cross that Jani Tanska almost turned into his own net. |

Captain Lee Howlett went close with two efforts as did El Ouargui who sent a shot blazing across the goalmouth only to go just inches wide of the far post. It looked very much as though the game was heading for a draw until a lapse in concentration just four minutes before full time allowed substitute Michael Carvill to pull the ball back to an unmarked Sheku Kamara who sent in a low shot past Arnold. City Line-Up: Arnold, Bexfield, Eagle, Fisk [Daley 44], Halliday, Gusterson, Smart, Howlett, El Ouargui, Thrale [Miller 82], Muddel. Subs Not Used: Rudd, West, Bussens. Top Canary: Bally Smart. |

The Under-16's also went down at Charlton, this time by a more substantial scoreline, with the home side running out 6-0 winners. |
