City were no match for Chelsea at Colney on Saturday when the Blues ran out comfortable 3-0 winners. All the goals came in the first 45 minutes, with the visitors taking full advantage of the strong wind - something The Canaries failed to do after the break, although in fairness to David Williams' side they made more of a game of it after the break. With Joe Lewis, Andrew Cave- Brown and Michael Spillane all on international duty during the week and Matthew Halliday still involved with Hereford it was an unfamiliar line-up for Norwich that included trialists Ben Strang and Sam Cutler in the starting eleven. It was Chelsea who were first out of the blocks and it needed a smart save from Steve Arnold to deny Ricardo Fernendes inside the first few minutes. |

Arnold, however, could do nothing about the opening goal on eleven minutes when from 35 yards Dean Furman unleashed a shot that turned this way and that in the wind leaving the City keeper rooted to the spot. Chelsea had City on the back foot and they extended their lead on 24 minutes when Furman sliced his way passed the City defence to beat Arnold with a rising shot from the edge of the area. City then lost defender Adam Gusterson with a knee injury, forcing Williams to reshuffle the pack but before City had a chance to sort themselves out they were three goals adrift when from a corner Liam Bridcutt found himself unmarked at the far post to slide the ball home. After the break City had a good shout for a penalty turned away by referee Mr Shaw when Andrew Fisk was dragged down. |

City were seeing much more of the ball in the second half and from a Robert Eagle corner Asmat El Ouargui just failed to get a touch inside the six-yard box. The two trialists were not looking out of place, indeed Strang made a super tackle to deny Chelsea what looked liked a certain fourth goal. Nick Hamann in the visitors' goal had something of a quiet game but he had to be alert to save an Eagle free kick late in the game, while City substitute Damon Lathrope saw a low drive deflected wide of the target. City Line-Up: Arnold, Cutler [Lathrope 70], Eagle, Gusterson [Fisk 34], Strang, Howlett, Eames, Bexfield, El Ouargui, Muddel, Smart. Subs Not Used: Rudd, Daley. Top Canary: Ben Strang. |
