Ross Kelly came off the substitute’s bench to earn a share of the points for Norwich with just six minutes left after City had conceded what looked like a dubious penalty just before half time. This result made it four drawn games in a row for Norwich, following Arsenal, Leicester and Birmingham, and the Canaries are still seeking a first victory since January. The game was played in cold blustery conditions with the occasional April shower intervening. Norwich had the first opportunity to score after three minutes. Damon Lathrope, on the edge of the Coventry penalty area, struck the ball well but the sting was taken out of the ball by the wind, which enabled Neil Collett to palm the ball over the crossbar. Coventry’s immediate response was to see Adam Walker drive forward to unleash an unstoppable thirty yard drive which whistled inches over Declan Rudd’s crossbar. On twenty one minutes another corner from Norwich, taken by Damon Lathrope, saw David Stephens attack the ball with his header failing to find the net. With thirty one minutes played Josh Dawkins made inroads before shooting wide of a post. Minutes later Coventry almost netted when Adam Walker received a through ball with only Declan Rudd to beat, but the Norwich goalkeeper stood firm and saved well. When it seemed both sides would reach half time goalless, another attack from Coventry saw Norwich’s Danny Kelly get tangled up with Matthew West , which saw the Coventry forward hit the sodden turf around the Norwich penalty area with differing views as to whether it was inside or outside. With appeals waved aside from the referee, Matthew West eventually stepped up and converted the penalty past Declan Rudd to put the Sky Blues ahead. In the second half Norwich, with the advantage of the wind, attacked over both flanks but were still failing to get the breakthrough they deserved. Jordan Dowdican on sixty seven minutes had the ball at his feet, but lashed wide. Norwich kept pressing, and on seventy two minutes produced a splendid attack on the Coventry goal. Declan Rudd clearance from his penalty area was collected by Jordan Dowdican, who played the ball out wide to Tom Adeyemi, whose cross was met by Dowdican, only for the striker’s shot to be charged down at the last possible moment. Nick Davey followed this with a header going wide from a Ross Kelly cross, both having joined the action as substitutes. A David Cooper corner from the right eluded all, but with David Stephens unmarked, another effort was again deflected. Credit must be given to Norwich full back Paul McLean who was immaculate throughout in this encounter in his defensive duties, and thwarted Coventry’s further raids. But Norwich finally found the net with just six minutes left on the clock. A strong cross from the right from Tom Adeyemi caught Coventry flat footed and Ross Kelly, sensing his chance, chased the wind assisted ball across the face of goal before finally hooking the ball high into the unguarded net at the near post. City Line-Up: Rudd, Cooper, Habergham, Lathrope (Smith 60), McLean, D. Kelly, Adeyemi, Stephens, Dowdican (Davey 78), Daley, Dawkin (R. Kelly 60). |
