East Anglian pride was restored somewhat on Saturday when City's Academy Under-18 side beat Ipswich at Colney by the only goal of the game. The Canaries rode their luck however with The Blues being denied by the woodwork no less than three times, and in a local derby that had almost everything both sides finished the game with ten men with Tom Miller for Norwich and Cathal Lordan for Town both seeing red. It was the visitors who started the game on top and Steve Arnold in the City goal had to be alert to make an early save from Charlie Sheringham. The City keeper was then called into action when he charged out of his area only to be pulled up for handball by referee Mr. Wesley. To their credit the Town bench called for the referee to be sensible, and this he did with Arnold being allowed to continue. From the set piece Town almost took the lead when a well struck free kick Lordan hit the upright. |

City's first attack saw Asmat El Ouargui send Seb Muddel clear but Town keeper Oskar Petursson spread himself to make the save. City continued to push forward and El Ouargui just failed to make contact with a good ball over the top of the Blues defence by Miller, who was enjoying one of his best games for the Under-18's. Shortly after Lordan was again denied by the woodwork, this again from a free kick, although credit has to be given to Arnold who managed to turn the ball onto the crossbar before Andrew Cave-Brown headed the loose ball to safety. With 44 minutes on the clock City finally broke the deadlock when Andrew Fisk won the ball in his own half and fed it through to El Ouargui who once again picked out Muddel. This time the City striker made no mistake, firing past Petursson. |

Town were once again first out of the blocks in the second half and forced three consecutive corners with Arnold making a couple of important clearances and El Ouargui clearing one ball off the line. Ipswich introduced all three of their substitutes and it was one of these in the shape of Tony Boto who was also denied by the woodwork when he saw a rising shot cannon back off the crossbar. Even then the danger was not over as the ball fell to Billy Clarke who had netted the only goal of the game in the match at Portman Road back in November, this time however his goal-bound shot was well blocked by Matthew Halliday. With ten minutes left on the clock and Town stepping up the pace, City were reduced to ten men when Miller received his second yellow card. But Town didn't maintain their one man advantage for long as Lordan was also sent packing again for a second bookable offence, and it was City who finished the game in the driving seat with substitute Chris Martin going close with a shot across goal. |
