Youngsters Make Their Point

NORWICH CITY UNDER 18's 1 IPSWICH TOWN UNDER-18's 1

It may have only been a draw against Ipswich Town at Colney on Saturday but the result stopped a run of five defeats for David Williams' side.

City looked the better team for long periods of this game, but they had to come from a goal behind to take a share of the points in a game that was typical of a local derby, including some crunching tackles in the final stages of the match.

There was a warm welcome back to Colney for Sammy Morgan who, as Educational Officer at Ipswich, was there to cheer on the boys in blue.

Both teams took some time to settle down and it was not until fifteen minutes into the game that a first attempt on goal came when Charlie Sheringham who sent his shot wide.

The action quickly turned to the other end with Chris Martin sending a looping shot high over the bar, although he went much closer moments later with a curling effort that Town keeper David Blackmore was relieved to see go inches wide of the upright.

Next it was the turn of Matthew Halliday to go close as his header crashed into the side netting.

Shortly before the break Blackmore tipped a Nicky Howell cross over the bar, while with virtually the last kick of the half Adam Smith sent a free-kick over the bar.

City continued to push forward after the break with this time Howell finding the side netting, before the same player then created the opening for Michael Spillane, but the schoolboy fired his shot over.

With 67 minutes on the clock, and somewhat against the run of play, Town opened the scoring when one time Canary trialist Danny Haynes raced onto a through ball to fire his shot past Shane Herbert.

It took City just twelve minutes to hit back when after some good build up play involving Andrew Cave-Brown and Rossi Jarvis the ball fell to Chris Martin who beat his man before firing his shot past Blackmore into the far corner.

Both sides failed to create any chances in the final ten minutes although that isn't to say that there was nothing going on as both teams took a game that was already simmering to boiling point and referee Mr. Wesley did well to allow 22 players remain on the pitch.
