Canaries Win Local Derby

NORWICH CITY UNDER-18's 2 IPSWICH TOWN UNDER-18's 0

With six local derbies on the fixture list this season, it was The Canaries who drew first blood when they scored a 2-0 win over The Blues at Colney on Saturday.

With several of his senior scholars having played in the convincing 4-0 home win for the reserves against Luton in midweek, David Williams named a young side to face Town who in turn themselves brought a young side up from Suffolk.

It was the visitors who went close in the opening minutes when City keeper Steve Arnold had to make a double save from point-blank range.

Norwich took a little while to get into their stride but when they did Kris Renton only just failed to get onto a through ball, while fellow Scot Paul McLean sent a header just wide of the target from a Jamie Eames corner.

Ipswich wasted a couple of good opportunities when first Luke Webster and then Jordan Rhodes sent efforts over the crossbar, and it was to cost them dear as on 34 minutes City opened the scoring.

Renton battled to win the ball before finding Eames whose right wing cross was met at the far post by Kurtis Byrne who fired in a half volley past Town keeper Andy Plummer.

City continued to keep the pressure on up until the break with Plummer needing two attempts to collect a free-kick from Damon Lathrope in first-half stoppage time.

Luke Daley had two great opportunities to extend City's advantage shortly after the break.

The first came from a Byrne cross to the far post that he put into the side netting, the second was a one on one with the keeper who to his credit made a good save from the City winger.

Town's best chance of the second-half came when Rhodes sent a curling shot just wide of the far post, but with 83 minutes on the clock Norwich made sure of all three points.

Goalscorer Byrne turned provider when he threaded a delightful ball through the Ipswich defence for Renton to run onto and slip the ball past Plummer.
