The first of this season's local derbies went to those in yellow and green on Saturday when Ricky Martin's side maintained their position at the top of their academy league with a slender 1-0 victory over Ipswich Town at Colney.

The visitors started brightly and Caolan Lavery came close with their first attack of the game firing a shot across Jed Steer's goal.

Steer was again called into action saving from Josh Carson before pulling off another save to deny Lavery who was causing the Canaries defence plenty of problems.

City's first real attack of the game saw Jamar Loza head the ball down for Jack Werndly who saw his effort blocked.

Canaries captain Matthew Ball was certainly leading by example with a great run that saw Cody Cropper tipping his 25 yard effort over the bar.

Playing with the wind advantage in the second half, Norwich quickly had Town on the back foot with Jason Dobbs going close with a header from a Remy Gordon cross while substitute Sam Kelly had a long range effort saved by Cropper.

Werndly, who signed as a second year scholar from West Ham earlier this week, saw an effort saved by Cropper who was certainly the busier of the two keepers.

With the game moving into injury time substitute Ryan Oakley, who was causing Town plenty of problems down the right flank, sent in an inviting cross that Callum Bennett headed into his own net to send the City youngsters into wild celebrations.
