A goal from Kris Renton, adding to the one he scored at Lowestoft midweek, saw City's Academy side record their second win in their pre-season campaign as they overcame Needham Market at the Bloomfield ground on Friday night. Just as he had done at Norwich United last Saturday, Ricky Martin fielded two almost completely different sides for each half at Needham, indeed it was only captain Paul McLean who played both periods. The only goal of the game came when Renton sent in a dipping 25-yard effort that the Needham keeper could only palm into the back of the net. City might have extended their lead when Damon Lathrope struck the crossbar with a free kick from a similar distance to the one he scored with last Saturday. The first-half certainly had some bite with the young Canaries giving as good as they got, indeed Tom Miller found himself in the referee's notebook for a couple of rather robust challenges. Ricky fielded a couple of trialists in the second half including French U19 striker Masimo and former Arsenal schoolboy Ammo. With a younger side after the break the Canaries found themselves on the back foot with Needham hitting the woodwork on a couple of occasions early in the half, but with McLean looking assured in the centre of defence City held onto the win their performance deserved. City Line-up (First-half): Arnold, Cooper, D. Kelly, McLean, O'Toole, Lathrope, Byrne, Miller, Mensah, Smart, Renton. City Line-up (Second-half): Rudd, Matthews, McLean, R. Kelly, Yong, Smith, Dixon, Daley, Ammo, Davey, Masimo. |
