Norfolk County almost upset the odds an Colney on Saturday and could have embarrassed Norwich City’s Academy if they had taken three golden opportunities early in the first half, in what was Norwich City’s final pre-season fixture ahead of the new season in the FA Premier Academy League. As it was, Norfolk County played some splendid football in the first half - until the last five minutes when Norwich scored three goals to swing the match in their favour. Norfolk County started brightly and nearly opened the scoring on five minutes when Liam Stockwell slid the ball past Declan Rudd but Ben Latimer was unable to apply the final touch as he followed in. Three minutes later a left hand side free kick by Marcus Godbold was glanced narrowly wide by Liam Stockwell…his second chance in as many minutes. On eleven minutes Declan Rudd had to be at his best to keep out a pile driver at his near post from John Carrier. Norwich first attempt on goal was on twenty minutes when Danny Kelly shot from distance. On thirty three minutes, Luke Winter, for Norfolk County, stormed through midfield but his effort went wide. Danny Kelly then brought the visitors goalkeeper Alex Street to his knees when he let fly. Soon after Norwich took the lead on forty one minutes as they picked up momentum. Tyree Clarke got clear on the right flank and delivered a far post cross and there was Roy Odiaka who got in first to power an unstoppable header in to the County net. Norwich then made in two after Roy Odiaka was bundled to the turf just outside the penalty area. George Francomb sent a swerving direct free- kick around defenders and out of reach of Alex Street to net. Just on half time Norwich made it three. A corner from the lively Josh Dawkin found Roy Odiaka at the far post, and he lashed the ball with his left foot high into the roof of the net from around six yards. Early in the second half, Declan Rudd made a finger tip save to concede a corner from John Carrier. On fifty two minutes Josh Dawkin broke into the Norfolk County penalty area and drilled the ball past Alex Street to make it four. Norfolk County then were awarded a penalty on fifty four minutes but Declan Rudd made a superb save, diving to his right. Norfolk County eventually found the net on the hour when Joel Brien clipped the ball from distance over the Norwich defence and Declan Rudd, to cheers from their travelling support. Dario Dumic headed against a post before Kenny Reeves, a second half substitute, rounded off the scoring for Norwich on seventy minutes, directing a header just beyond Alex Street from a George Francomb cross. Norwich did have two late attempts through Brian Nolan and Manny Richardson, before Chris Hall netted for Norfolk County, taking his goal well from just inside the Norwich penalty area. It was an entertaining match, however it should be said that Norfolk County made the Canaries work for this victory in all departments. City Line-up: Declan Rudd; Brian Nolan, George Francomb, Johnbull Omeregie, Dario Dumic, David Stephens, Tyree Clarke (53. Nick Davey), Tom Adeyemi (56. Manny Richardson), Danny Kelly, Roy Odiaka, Josh Dawkin (64. Kenny Reeves). |
