The long trip to the south coast paid dividends for the Canaries on Wednesday when they came away from Fratton Park with a resounding 5-1 victory over Portsmouth to give them a glamour forth round trip to St. James Park to take on Premiership giants Newcastle United.

David Williams had a virtually injury free squad to pick from which saw Kris Renton partnering Chris Martin up front and it was a five star performance from Martin that stole the show. With Peter Grant watching from the stands the City boss will doubtless have been impressed with Martin's contribution to a fine victory for the City youngsters.

It was not just Martin who stood out in a game that City dominated from almost the first to the last whistle.

Playing alongside Michael Spillane, Alvin Quaye turned in one of his best performances in Canary colours, while fullback Mark O'Toole improves with every game.

It took City a little time to get the measure of their hosts, but once they had it seemed there was no looking back.
To be fair to Pompey had it not been a typically super save from Steve Arnold to deny Jack Plummer it could have been the home side who opened the scoring.

As it was, it was City who went a goal up on 26 minutes when Martin drilled in a low shot from twenty yards that had keeper Nick Jordan scampering across his goal to no avail.

That was about it as far as the first half was concerned. The second 45 saw the Canaries up the pace however, starting when Martin had a shot come back off the upright only for Renton to header the rebound against the crossbar.

With 65 minutes on the clock Martin did get his and City's second when he raced onto a through ball from Smart to slide the ball home.

City continued to hold the upper hand and on 83 minutes double goalscorer Martin turned provider when he fed the ball into Renton who nipped in to slip the ball under Jordan.
Just sixty seconds later the game was all over as far as Portsmouth were concerned when Smart cut in from the left wing to fire in a stinging shot into the far corner.

Martin was still causing the home defence all sorts of problems and when Jordan failed to hold onto a shot from the Beccles youngster Jamie Eames was first to react to sneak the ball just inside the near post.

Deep in stoppage time Pompey scored a consolation goal when substitute Matthew Ritchie fired in a low drive from the edge of the box after City were guilty of taking the foot off the pedal.

But it was a rare mistake in a game that was as one sided as you are likely to see - chances are that will not be the case when they face Newcastle.
