City's Academy side notched up their first points of the season with a slender 1-0 victory away to Reading, with the Canaries goal coming midway through the first half with a strike from Kurtis Byrne. With David Williams away on Welsh Under-21 duty, it was Ricky Martin at the helm as City faced Reading who had won both their opening games of the season including a victory over Manchester United. The home side made all the opening play as City found themselves pinned back in their own half for the opening ten minutes, but the City back four looked to be in top form as Reading found chances few and far between. Indeed it was The Canaries who created the best chances. |

First Kris Renton fired over the bar after some good build up play from Luke Daley, while on fifteen minutes Ross Kelly thought he had found the net when he cut in from the right wing to beat Alex McCarthy in the Reading goal only to be denied by both posts as the ball cannoned off one and then the other before Reading cleared the danger. City had only to wait a further ten minutes however to open the scoring, again following good work from Daley, who headed the ball into the path of Kurtis Bryne who had the time to bring the ball under control before finding the far corner of the net. Shortly after Byrne turned provider when he threaded a delightful ball through to the lively Kris Renton only for his shot to be blocked by the outstretched leg of McCarthy. Up until now Steve Arnold had something of a quiet opening 45 minutes, but he had to be alert moments before the break to bring off a good save to deny Reading winger James Henry. |

Both sides wasted good opportunities in the second half with Simon Church heading wide of the target for Reading, while City substitute Chris Martin should have done better from six yards when he just couldn't get the ball out from under his feet. With a strong wind advantage Reading had more attacking play in the second half and Arnold again frustrated Henry with yet another good save, while at the other end Renton made sure that Reading had to stay alert at the back. Deep into stoppage time and Reading thought they had earned a point when Henry finally found a way past Arnold but like The Canaries in the first half Reading were denied by the woodwork as the ball came crashing back off the underside of the crossbar. |
