Norwich Under-18's continued their successful pre-season on Saturday, running out 2-0 winners against Rushden and Diamonds at Colney. Asmat El Ouargui's first goal since returning from injury and Chris Martin's last minute effort from twenty yards secured the win against a hard-working Northamptonshire side. City included Andrew Cave-Brown, Andrew Fisk and Matthew Halliday in their side, all three fresh from the first team sub's bench against Inter Milan. Also in the line-up was trialist goalkeeper Steve Arnold. City had the better of the first-half with El Ouargui looking dangerous up front. Indeed it was the Dane who put the Canaries one up on the half hour, winning a tussle for the ball before breaking away to beat the advancing keeper. |

The second-half saw the expected multitude of substitutions with in-form striker Chris Martin one of six players coming off the bench. Schoolboy Luke Daley also got a 25-minute run-out and he and Martin both had a couple of good opportunities after coming on. Nevertheless Rushden continued to make a game of it and Shane Herbert had to be at his best to block a shot when a Rushden striker was through on goal. It wasn't until the 90th minute that Norwich sealed the game. A fine piece of play saw Matthew Halliday's ball out of defence find Robert Eagle in midfield. Eagle fed Chris Martin on the edge of the area and the striker looked up before hitting a superb strike into the bottom corner. |
