David Williams saw his side lose their opening game of the season when they went down 2-1 to Sheffield United at Colney on Saturday. With three second-year trainees out injured, Williams was forced to change things around. This included drafting in Beccles Town keeper Daniel Cable into the starting line up with Steven Arnold not yet fully recovered from injury and Declan Rudd away on England Under-16 duties. It is strange how things work out as it seems that Cable is all set to play against the Canaries when the Under-16's travel to Beccles on Monday night to play in the annual Jack Constance Cup match. The visitors had the better of the opening period as City failed to make much impression on the game and they found themselves a goal adrift on 20 minutes when Keith Quinn fired the Blades in front after some poor defending by Norwich. |

This seemed to spark City into life as Bally Smart worked his magic down the left wing, creating the opening for Ross Kelly who saw his shot go just over the crossbar. Moments later it was Jamie Eames who turned provider this time for Kris Renton who looked certain to score but was foiled by the outstretched legs of United's keeper Steven Hernandez, who turned out to be a thorn in City's side throughout the game. Hernandez came to the Blades' rescue yet again when he tipped a Damon Lathrope effort over the bar, while Lathrope went close in first half stoppage time when he sent a low shot across the face of goal. Just three minutes into the second half and City were back on level terms when good work by Smart created the opening for Renton to pick his spot at the far post. Just five minutes later however and the visitors regained their lead when City were caught napping from a free kick, allowing Kyle Naughton to fire the ball home off the underside of the bar. |

City were far from out of the game however as they pushed forward looking to draw level once again. However they found Hernandez at the top of his game: first denying Kelly when he turned his shot over the bar and then, saving the best to last, parrying a Renton free kick that looked certain to be going in at the foot of the post. City Line-Up: Cable, Bexfield, Lathrope, Miller, O'Toole, Kelly, Eames [Daley 77], Martin, Renton, Byrne, Smart. Subs Not Used: Muddel, Arnold, Dawson, Cooper. Top Canary: Bally Smart. |
