Gusterson Penalty Not Enough Against Leaders

SOUTHAMPTON UNDER-18's 2 NORWICH CITY UNDER 18's 1

A late penalty from Adam Gusterson was all Norwich City Under-18s had to show for their long trip to the South Coast as David Williams' side went down by the odd goal in three at Southampton.

A goal down at the break, the Canaries found it hard going against the runaway league leaders.

Indeed, the young Saints have lost only one game in the past two seasons at their Marchwood training ground, and that was against the Canaries last season.

The home side were soon into their stride with Theo Walcott forcing Joe Lewis into a good save.

City were giving as good as they got, however, with Matthew Halliday having a header cleared off the line and, from the rebound, Gusterson seeing his shot saved by Andrew McNeil in the Saints' goal.

With 15 minutes gone, City went a goal adrift when a cross to the far post was headed back into the area by David McGoldrick for Adam Lallana to head home from close range.

Shortly afterwards, Lewis needed lengthy treatment after he fell awkwardly under a challenge.

Rossi Jarvis, who was playing in an unaccustomed forward role, had a shot blocked just before the break.

In the second half, Robert Eagle forced a save from the Southampton 'keeper after he connected with a cross from Andrew Cave-Brown. At the other end, Lewis had to be alert to turn a shot around for a Saints corner.
With just nine minutes left, Southampton scored their second when a mistake in the City defence allowed McGoldrick to sidefoot the ball past Lewis.

Three minutes later, City were back in the reckoning when they were awarded a penalty for handball. Gusterson stepped up to score his first goal for the under-18s.

Williams introduced James Paterson for his first academy game, but City failed to trouble the home defence in the dying minutes.
