Saints Win Again

NORWICH CITY UNDER-18's 1 SOUTHAMPTON UNDER-18's 2

For the second time in three days City's Academy side found themselves suffering defeat at the hands of Southampton. After the midweek 1-0 reversal at St. Mary's in the F.A. Youth Cup, Saturday's 2-1 league defeat at Colney was a similar scoreline to the one at Marchwood earlier in the season.

David Williams took the opportunity to bolster his young side, drafting in the three permitted over aged players to try and counteract a side that has only suffered one defeat all season.

The game however did not get underway as Williams would have wanted with the visitors taking the lead after just ten minutes.

A lofted ball to the far post was headed back by Feliiciano Condesso into the danger area where Theo Walcott had the simplest of tap ins from just six yards.

Joe Lewis

Joe Lewis tipped this effort over the bar
City threatened briefly when Asmat El Ouargui rose to head the ball only for the Saints' keeper Andrew McNeil to snap the ball off the Danish striker's head.

Southampton extended their lead on fifteen minutes with again Walcott doing the damage. This time he gave Joe Lewis no chance with a well drilled shot that went in off the far post.

Craig Richards, who had scored the only goal of the game at St.Mary's, might have made it three for the visitors but he could only direct his header into the arms of Lewis.

Clearly Southampton was the better side in the opening 45 minutes, but it was a different story after the break as City stepped their game up.
El Ouargui was the first to test McNeil with a stinging shot that the Southampton keeper could only parry away.

Next it was the turn of Adam Smith, who fired over the bar after a good run from midfield, while shortly after Lee Blackburn was unlucky to see a shot shave the outside of the post after some good build up play involving Andrew Cave-Brown.

Smith, who was looking impressive in midfield, forced McNeil into a save with a low drive, while there was a shout for a penalty after Cave-Brown appeared to be bundled over in the box.

With just five minutes left on the clock all the second half pressure finally paid dividends when City pulled a goal back. It was only fitting that Smith should have a hand in the goal as he produced a great cross form the left that worked it's way through to Olly Willis who finished from close range.

Despite the goal being no more than a consolation goal, Williams will have been pleased with the way his side fought back after the break.
