West Ham United’s in-form England U19 striker Freddie Sears netted a hat trick which, together with an Anthony Edgar goal, left Norwich on another unfortunate away day excursion without any return at West Ham on Saturday. City included professionals Chris Martin and Bally Smart in their line-up, while Under-16 trialist Kyle Haynes from Birmingham City was given a run out at right back. On a surprisingly warm and sunny morning it was West Ham who forced early corners. Declan Rudd was called on early to keep out a strike from Junior Stanislas but Norwich responded, calling for Adam Street in the Hammers goal to save at his near post from Mark O’Toole’s free kick. Norwich’s best chance came on twenty three minutes. Good midfield play from Korey Smith saw the ball played out wide from where it was delivered in at the far post only for Bally Smart to fire over the cross bar on the run. On twenty seven minutes West Ham’s Freddie Sears attacked the penalty area and had his heels clipped by defender Sam Habergham and went to ground. |

With the penalty awarded, Sears himself stepped up and drilled in the spot kick inside Declan Rudd’s right hand post. Five minutes later Norwich went further behind. Junior Stanislas and Freddie Sears set up another attack, with the latter crossing the ball into the penalty area from the right for Anthony Edgar to apply a finishing touch. With forty minutes on the clock Hammers Jordan Spence, under pressure, was forced to concede a corner. From the flag kick, taken by Mark O’Toole, Tom Miller, captaining the side in the absence of Paul McLean, gained height above the Hammers rearguard at the near post to head home across goal to reduce the arrears. Norwich came out battling for the second half, and two minutes in, Ross Kelly had sight of goal, just shooting wide of the post. A minute later, Norwich almost levelled the match. Luke Daly sprinted away with the ball before unleashing a superb angled strike from around twelve yards out, which produced an outstanding save from West Ham’s Canadian born goalkeeper Street - flinging himself to his left near post to keep the ball out. On fifty three minutes, a Junior Stanislas free kick some thirty yards from goal, forced Declan Rudd to save at his near post but as the ball squirmed from his grasp and came to a halt on the line it was Freddie Sears who reacted first to blast the ball home. Norwich did have a slice of luck on seventy two minutes. Junior Stanislas released the ball from midfield which found full back Ashley Miller with only Declan Rudd to beat but his shot rebounded off the inside of the upright. In the last minute, Freddie Sears was given the chance to complete his hat trick, which he gleefully took, rounding the advance of Declan Rudd, to prod the ball home along the turf to net. City Line Up: Rudd, Haynes, O’Toole, R. Kelly (68. Lathrope), Miller, Habergham, Daley, Smith, D. Kelly (82. Richardson), Martin, Smart.
