It might have only been a goalless draw, but any point against West Ham is always worthy of note and David Williams will have been pleased with the way his team ground out a result, even more so with the difficult F.A.Youth Cup tie at Burnley just 4 days away. Williams elected to field the side that is more or less expected to line up at Turf Moor on Wednesday, the odd man out being full back Olly Willis, who is of course too old for the competition. There was a place on the bench for new Danish signing Asmat El Ouargui, while Williams handed a first appearance to Under-16 midfielder Patrick Bexfield. It was the Hammers who started the game in the driving seat, forcing 3 early corners, but Joe Lewis made short work of the crosses as The Canaries got their game together. |

Indeed it was City who came close to opening the scoring when Darren Bechet in the visitors' goal had to be alert to palm away an in-swinging corner from Robert Eagle. Schoolboys Michael Spillane and Chris Martin both tried their luck from distance, but Bechet was well positioned to make comfortable saves. West Ham winger Sosthene Yao, who had earlier been denied by Matthew Halliday, wasted a golden opportunity when he blasted over the bar. Into the second half and City had their best opening of the game. A great run from Andrew Cave-Brown saw the City full back pick out Eagle whose shot was well blocked by a West Ham defender. Williams introduced El Ouargui, while the visitors brought on Moses Ashikodi, who had scored against City at Reserve team level two weeks previously. |
