Halliday Injured As Hammers Take The Points

NORWICH CITY UNDER 18's 1 WEST HAM UNITED UNDER 18's 2

City's opening Under-18 game of 2006 saw them entertain West Ham at Colney. Despite the fact that there was only a single goal between the two sides, it was a comfortable win for the visitors with The Canaries consolation goal coming deep in stoppage time.

With Michael Spillane having travelled to Plymouth with the first team it was Lee Howlett who partnered Matthew Halliday in the centre of defence as The Hammers put City under pressure from the first whistle.

Adam Gusterson came to City's rescue after just a few minutes, first with a clearing header and then clearing the ball when keeper Joe Lewis was under pressure.

City had a couple of early opportunities, both falling to Bally Smart. The first saw his shot blocked after a good run, while the second effort, after West Ham failed to clear the danger from a corner, saw the City front man shoot just wide of the target.

Jack Jeffrey was denied not once but twice by Lewis as the visitors kept the pressure up, finishing the first-half with three consecutive corners.

City might have opened the scoring shortly after the break when Andrew Fisk set Seb Muddel racing clear but he could only find the side netting from the tightest of angles after he rounded David Blackmore in the West Ham goal.

At the other end Lewis needed the help of Halliday after he could only half stop a shot, but in clearing the ball the City defender injured his knee and would play no further part in the game.

Reduced to ten men while Halliday received treatment, City had a good shout for a penalty turned down and to add insult to injury West Ham raced up the other end to open the scoring when substitute Lee Hales converted a left wing cross.
David Williams introduced fifteen-year-old David Cooper for his first taste of Under-18 action as West Ham went in search of their second.

Lewis pulled off yet another good save, this time to deny Hogan Ephriam.

However with just twelve minutes remaining Ephriam put the game beyond City's reach with a low drive that Lewis managed to get a hand to but the City keeper couldn't prevent it crossing the line.

Deep into stoppage time City finally got on the scoresheet after a surging run by Smart who crossed for Chris Martin in the middle. When Martin's shot crashed off the underside of the crossbar it looked as though the game would finish 2-0, however the assistant referee signalled, much to the dismay of West Ham, that the ball had crossed the line. It was to no avail however as seconds after the restart the referee blew for full-time.
