WILLIS STRIKE NOT ENOUGH AT CHARLTON

CHARLTON ATHLETIC UNDER 19's 2 NORWICH CITY UNDER 19's 1

City's Academy side went down by the odd goal in three at Charlton on Saturday, however the score line does not tell the whole story with Sammy Morgan's side having the lions share of the play, particuarly in the second half, and also having a couple of good shouts for penalties turned down.

Added to that Morgan had one schoolboy in the shape of Andrew Fisk in the starting line up, with a further three youngsters on the bench including 14 year-old Ardavan Djhansouzi, who came on as a second half substitute, probably making him the youngest player to have played for City's under-19 side.

The Canaries quickly got into their stride and they took the lead on 15 minutes with a peach of a goal from full back Olly Willis. Some neat build up play involving Damian Batt saw the ball pushed to Willis, who proceeded to jink his way past 3 Charlton defenders before sliding the ball into the far corner.

The home side thought they had pulled level shortly after, when from a free kick a powerful header struck the underside of the crossbar before City cleared the danger.

Charlton finished the half much the stronger side and scored two goals in as many minutes to take them into the dressing room with a goal advantage.

The first came on 40 minutes when the ball was cut back from the left flank for Alex Varney to finish from close range. On 42 minutes Varney again finished from close range this time with a right wing cross, despite the fact there did appear to be a good call from City for offside.

Andrew Fisk, who was having a good game in the middle of the park, tried his luck from long range, but it was an easy save for the Charlton keeper. This was quickly followed by a shot from David Chick that failed to find the target.

City then had their first and probably best penalty appeal turned down, when Batt was pulled back chasing a through ball.
Charlton were clearly being pinned back as Crane sent a header inches over the bar, and shortly before full time the same player seemed to have been obstructed when in a good position on the edge of the 6 yard box.

Sammy Morgan was pleased with the way his side battled throughout the game and it seems there were no injuries picked up, as all eyes now turn to Tuesday night's F.A.Youth Cup game against Sheffield United at Carrow Road.
