England secured a 2-0 win in this international friendly in Harderwijk, Holland. More importantly their front line was well led by Norwich City's Ian Henderson who also got the second goal just before half-time. A crowd of around 2,500 made their way into the homely stadium at the Sportpark de Strokel, on the edge of this picturesque town north of Arnhem. England used a 4-5-1 formation with Henderson the lone front runner aginst the Dutch who are coached by the popular Ruud Gullit. Despite the influence of Gullit, the hosts found it difficult right from the start to break down the English defence and midfield and seemed more than content to play the square ball. |

Our man from Norwich got in an early cross to test the Dutch defence but it eluded James Milner arriving at the far post. On fourteen minutes however Milner was on hand to tap in from short range to give England the lead. Surprisingly even this failed to spark the Netherlands attack and only once was Ross Turnbull (Middlesbrough) in the England goal stretched as Ryan Babel broke away from his marker to put in a testing shot which the England keeper deflected wide. Three minutes before the break England went two up. Milner took a short corner to Wayne Routledge who crossed for Henderson to finish with a well placed header at the near post. The second-half turned out to somewhat of a non-event with England content to hold their lead and Holland unable to cause real danger. A string of substituions hardly helped the flow of the game. Dean Bowditch of Ipswich took over the strikers role from his Norwich colleague midway through the second half with Hendo moving to a right midfield role. |

This was certainly a good international outing for "Hendo" who particularly in the first half caused problems for his continental opponents. Of the other English players Routledge looked particularly sharp. England Line-Up: Turnbull (Middlebrough), Jones (Crewe), Borrowdale (Palace), Gardner (Forest), Raven (Liverpool), Collins (Sunderland), Routledge (Palace), Groves (Forest), Henderson (Norwich), Long (Charlton), Milner (Leeds). Subs: Ifil (Spurs), Young (Reading), Sankofa (Charlton), Huddlestone (Derby), Kilkenny (Arsenal), Bowditch (Ipswich), Holmes (Derby) |
