Ipswich picked up all three points in the first of this season's derbies when, in a soon to be forgotten game, they overcame City's Academy side at Colney. Both sides were fresh from success in the F. A. Youth Cup with The Canaries beating Bolton at Carrow Road on Monday night, while Town pulled off an extra time victory over Leeds at Elland Road. Sammy Morgan made some changes to the team that played at Carrow Road, with schoolboys Jamie Clarkson and Seamus Kelleher coming in for their first starts, while Greg Crane returned in defence alongside Matthew Watts, who missed the cup game through suspension. |

The visitors were quickly into their stride and it needed an outstretched leg form Joe Lewis to deny Craig Reid after just 6 minutes. Nevertheless, it was City who opened the scoring just 4 minutes later when Danny Crow sent in a cross that fell for Seamus Kelleher who took one touch before curling a delightful left foot shot wide of Scott Peat in the Town goal. City's lead was short lived however, less than a minute to be exact, as Reid raced onto a through ball to round Lewis and slot the ball home from a tight angle. The rest of the half produced very little of note, although 3 minutes before the break Daniel Flack might have given Ipswich the lead but with just the keeper to beat he failed to hit the target. |

Nothing much changed after the break, with both sides huffing and puffing their way through the game, until, with 67 minutes on the clock, Ipswich were gifted a goal when Lewis completely missed a Matthew Halliday backpass that simply trickled over the line. It was a cruel blow for The Canaries, for; while they didn't deserve to be leading the game, Town's contribution to the entertainment was not much better. City could offer little in response, even with Crane being thrown forward in the final 10 minutes. Deep into injury time the visitors made sure of all 3 points when, from a corner, Liam Craig was on hand to head home at the far post. City Line-Up: Lewis, Batt, Chick, Crane, Watts [Halliday 45], Smith, Howell, Blackburn, Clarkson [Fisk 77], Crow, Kelleher [Eagle 56] Subs Not Used: J.Osborne, Howlett. |
