Youngsters Secure A Point

IPSWICH TOWN UNDER 19's 2 NORWICH CITY UNDER 19's 2

Gary Butcher took charge of the Under-19's at Ipswich this morning, although in truth most of the players on the pitch were in fact Under-15's after Sammy Morgan decided to rest his squad ahead of next Tuesday's Youth Cup tie at Old Trafford.

Ipswich also fielded a very young side and to their credit both sides produced some neat and tidy football, which at times brought warm applause from the Playford Road crowd.

Town started the game in the driving seat as City found it difficult to get out of their own half, indeed it needed a vital interception from Andrew Cave-Brown to deny Ipswich what almost certainly would have been the opening goal.

City finally got their game together with Chris Martin forcing Town keeper David Blackmore into his first save.

The City keeper Liam Hembling was also called into action, producing a good save from Owen Garvan.

Moments later Hembling was unable to stop an effort from Garvan but Cave-Brown was where every good full back should be at such times when he cleared the ball off the goal line.

With 37 minutes on the clock City opened the scoring with a stunning 20 yard strike from midfielder John Bell.

Into the second half and Town needed just 10 minutes to draw level when Garvan crashed an unstoppable shot off the underside of the City crossbar.

Just two minutes later and Norwich were back in control when, after a great run into the Ipswich penalty area, the ball fell for Chris Martin to fire in a low shot down to Blackmore's left.
Town were far from done however and on 65 minutes they drew level for the second time when Jack Haverson headed home from a corner.

Late in the game both sides had chances to collect all 3 points, with first Tony Boto blasting over for Town with an open goal begging, while in stoppage time Martin fired a shot across goal that went only inches wide of the far post.
