CROW ON THE MARK AGAINST SPURS

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR UNDER 19's 0 NORWICH CITY UNDER 19's 1

City's Academy side made the best possible start to 2004 with a win at Spurs on Saturday. The only goal of the game came in the first-half and was scored by Danny Crow, adding to the two goals he scored for The Reserves at Ipswich in midweek.

With the fourth round F.A.Youth Cup clash against Sheffield United at Carrow Road a little over a week away Sammy Morgan and Ricky Martin decided that they would play an under-18 side with the three under-19's David Chick, Damian Batt and Greg Crane all on the substitutes bench.

After the Christmas break both teams seemed a little slow in getting into their stride, but it was City who first started to stamp some authority on the game with some good possession, although they rarely troubled the Spurs defence. It was the home side in fact who had the first real chance of the game when a well-struck shot hit the Canaries' crossbar.

This seemed to spur Norwich forward and on 35 minutes they took the lead. Adam Smith, who was involved in most things in midfield, threaded a delightful ball through the home defence for the ever-willing Crow to run onto and fire the ball home.

Spurs could have pulled level shortly before the break but Joe Lewis had other ideas, producing a truly brilliant one-handed save that brought warm applause, not only from the travelling contingent of Canary supporters, but also from England goalkeeping coach Ray Clemence.

After the break Spurs had much more of the play, but just as City had done during the opening minutes of the game, they failed to make it count. Indeed it was City who could have extended their lead with again Crow and then Lee Blackburn having good opportunities, while the lively Nicky Howell - who also caught the eye of Clemence - was unlucky to see a shot strike the woodwork.
