After their F. A. Youth Cup exit at the hands of Manchester United in midweek the last thing City's Academy side needed was a tough trip to West Ham on Saturday. In the event, The Hammers ran out 2-1 winners, a fair reflection on the day insisted Sammy Morgan, although City came close to sneaking a point in the closing minutes. It was the home side, who themselves were in cup action midweek when they knocked out Nottingham Forest, who started the brightest and might have opened the scoring had it not been for two excellent saves from Shane Herbert. Midway through the half City started to see more of the ball, with their midfield trio of Adam Smith, Lee Blackburn and Lee Howlett battling well in the middle of the park. |

With the half time approaching it was City who almost went in a goal up when Danny Crow was put clear in a one on one situation with the keeper, only for the City marksman to fire his shot over the crossbar. Just five minutes after the break and the home side took the lead after some poor defending from Norwich allowed the ball to be toe-poked home by Graeme Carrick from just 6 yards. City bounced back on the hour mark when Lee Howlett fed Crow who this time, with a similar position to the one he had before the break, made no mistake slotting the ball in from 18 yards. Both sides then went in search of the winner and unfortunately for City it came for the home side when with just 15 minutes left on the clock Herbert was beaten with a rasping free kick from Marce Collington. Morgan and Ricky Martin changed things around for the final few minutes and it almost paid dividends when Blackburn headed the ball down for Crow but his first time volley went over the bar. |
