27.04.03 - HAT-TRICK FOR DANNY CROW IN CANARIES GOAL FEAST

Following on from David Nielson's hat-trick for the Reserves at Crystal Palace in midweek, it was the turn of Academy striker Danny Crow to hit the hat-trick trail when he scored three of the five goals Adrian Boothroyd's side crashed in against Stoke City at Colney on Saturday, in what was the final Academy game of the season. Today's treble from Crow now takes his total for the season into double figures, and with City boss Nigel Worthington on hand a call up into the first team squad for next week's final game of the season against Preston is a possibility.
There was only one way this game was going to go after Nicky Howell tested Robert Dugan in the visitor's goal inside the first two minutes.
The first of Crow's goals came after just five minutes when he ran onto a delightful through ball from Howell to put the ball beyond the reach of Dugan.
City's second after 15 minutes was certainly route one, with a clearance from Joe Lewis falling for Crow to cleverly chip the ball over the stranded Dugan.
Five minutes later and Jake Osborne made it three when he was first to react after Dugan could only block Josh Clarke's header.
Up until this point Lewis, fresh from his latest England appearances, had been a mere spectator but late in the half he produced a great double save.
Ten minutes after the break a great passing move involving Crow and Adam Smith resulted in Clarke knocking in City's fourth.
Stoke did manage to pull a goal back through Paul Tortoishell, but it was Crow who had the final say ten minutes before time when he converted an Ollie Willis cross.

City line-up: Lewis, Willis, J.Osborne, Gusterson, Watts, Smith, Howell [Gil 72], Blackburn [Howlett 60], Clarke [Kelleher 80], Crow, Meehan [Eagle 45]

Subs not used: Herbert ,Halliday.

Top Canary: Danny Crow.

23.04.03 - EASTER MONDAY SUCCESS FOR THE ACADEMY

Easter Monday saw Danish visitors to the Academy with teams from Holstebro and Lyngby at Colney.

The Canaries' academy won the Under-11 game against Holstebro but the Under-13's suffered a 3-0 defeat against a team from the same club. Lyngby brought an Under-15 side and went down 6-0 to our Academy side.

Independent of the results all the teams will have undoubtedly benefited from the experience of playing against against continental opposition.

19.04.03 - JARVIS BECOMES YOUNGEST EVER CANARY

When Ryan Jarvis was introduced as a second half substitute at Walsall today, he became the youngest ever player to play for the Norwich first team. At 16 years, 8 months and 19 days he beats the record previously held by Ian Davies.
Along with Ian Henderson, Dean Sinclair and Jason Shackell, Jarvis becomes the fourth Academy player to make his debut for the first team this season.

To commemorate Ryan's record FONCY will be producing a limited edition coffee mug. These will hopefully be ready in time for the club's Open Day on Monday 5th May.

19.04.03 - YOUNG HORNETS NO MATCH FOR ON FORM CANARIES

After holding Arsenal at home last Saturday City's Under-17 side went one better at Colney on Thursday when they scored a comfortable victory over Watford. The 3-1 scoreline could have been even more in City's favour with the woodwork denying them on at least three occasions.
Josh Clarke opened the scoring after a great run by Danny Crow who danced his way past three defenders before setting up Clarke who fired home from the edge of the area.
The second goal came from Crow who lifted the ball over Lee Walker in the visitors' goal after some excellent play from Lee Blackburn.
Watford did manage to pull a goal back late in the game but the result was put beyond all doubt late in injury time when Blackburn marked a superb performance with a stunning goal that went in off the post.

City line-up: Herbert, Gusterson, Eagle [Fisk], Halliday, Willis, Smith, Gil, Blackburn, Clarke, Crow [Howlett], Howell.

Subs not used: Payne, J.Osborne.

19.04.03 - ENGLAND U16 UPDATE

England Under-16's, with Norwich Keeper Joe Lewis in the squad, followed up their opening day win in the Montaigu tournament with a 2-0 defeat of Gabon on Thursday. This despite playing three-quarters of the match with only ten men following an early sending-off.

Today England lost their final group game against France 3-1. They now face Portugal on Easter Monday afternoon in the Play-off for 3rd place.

We hope to bring you more details on Joe's part in the tournament next week.

16.04.03 - ACADEMY KEEPER WITH ENGLAND U16 IN FRENCH TOURNAMENT

Academy Keeper Joe Lewis is spending Easter with the England U16 Squad at the Tournai de Montaigu (near Nantes) in France.
The tournament kicked off today, Wednesday, with England beating Russia 3-0 this evening. Thursday sees a group game against Gabon, who this evening lost 8-0 to France. England complete their group games against the host country on Easter Saturday. Monday then sees Finals Day, where tournament placings will be decided against teams from Group B (comprising of Portugal, Japan, Italy and Ireland).

The high-class tournament should give Joe some more excellent experience and allow him time to work with the England U16 goalkeeping coach Tony Parks.

We will endeavour to present an update on the tournament on this page after Easter.

The Tournament Website, with regular updates, can be found at: http://perso.wanadoo.fr/mondial.football.montaigu/

13.04.03 - ALL SQUARE AGAINST THE GUNNERS

NORWICH CITY UNDER-17's 1 ARSENAL UNDER-17's 1

Although City's Academy league season has drawn to a close there is still plenty of action to be had at Colney, and it all started with an entertaining match against Arsenal on Saturday.
It was certainly a game of two halves, with The Canaries shading the first 45 minutes, although after a rousing on pitch team talk at half time by The Gunners coach, it was certainly a different Arsenal after the break.
After a slow start, City finally got into their stride and almost opened the scoring through Nicky Howell, who brought out a good save from Michael Jordon in the visitors' goal.
Howell again went close moments later after he was put clear by the hard working Danny Crow.
The break through came on 24 minutes after Crow laid off a long ball from Adam Smith, and, with just the keeper to beat, Josh Clarke stroked the ball home.
City might have made it two just before the break, but Matthew Halliday saw his header go just over the crossbar.
After the interval the visitors stepped up a gear and they drew level through Dorian Small, who was unchallenged when he headed home a Patrick Greeg free kick. All this came after City keeper Shane Herbert had made a couple of fine saves to deny Hassan Sulaiman and Neil Kilkenny.
The visitors might have nicked the win deep into injury time when Dean MacDonald saw his shot strike the woodwork.

City line-up: Herbert, Willis, Osborne, Halliday [Gusterson 81], Watts, Smith, Howell, Blackburn, Clarke, Crow, Eagle [Fisk 70].

Subs not used: Gil, Kellenher.

Top Canary: Danny Crow.

For pictures of the game see the Match Report Section.

13.04.03 - FRIENDS OF NORWICH CITY YOUTH PLAYER OF THE SEASON

During the half time interval at Easter Monday's home fixture against Wolves, FONCY will be making their annual player of the season award. This year's winner will collect his award from Chairman John Landamore and committee member Richard Bland.
This is the seventh year the award has been made, and the winner will have his name on the plaque alongside the likes of Jason Shackell and Adrian Coote.

05.04.03 - SHACKELL MAKES HIS DEBUT

Academy third year trainee Jason Shackell made his debut for The Canaries first team at Derby this afternoon.
Nineteen year old Shackell, a former Friends Of Norwich City Youth player of the season, signed his first professional contract earlier this year. After being named as an unused substitute in last weeks victory over Bradford City at Carrow Road, Shackell got his big chance after Adam Drury reported feeling unwell before the game against the struggling Rams. Although regarded as a left sided central defender, Shackell was asked to fill in at left back and by all accounts he did a good job.
He now joins Ian Henderson and Dean Sinclair as current Academy players who have played for Nigel Worthington's first team.

05.04.03 - CANARIES MISS OUT ON A POINT AFTER PENALTY SAVE

A missed penalty two minutes before time saw City go down by the only goal of the game, in what was their final Academy Under-19 match of the season.
Adrian Boothroyd was forced into a late change after Dean Sinclair was drafted into the first team squad last night, the rising midfield star making it onto the substitutes' bench at Pride Park.
The Canaries forced an early penalty, but when the ball broke free it was the home side who raced clear for Mark Yeates to beat Aaron Osborne at his near post.
Chances were few and far between but City could count themselves unlucky not to draw level on the half hour mark, when Greg Crane saw a powerful downward header blocked on the line.
Then shortly before the break a good cross from the right by Josh Clarke saw Damian Batt cleverly step over the ball only for Danny Crow to see his effort go just inches wide of the post.
After the break Jake Osborne fired a volley just over the cross bar while at the other end Yeates thought he had got his second with a well struck free kick, but it was the woodwork that came to City's rescue.
With just a couple of minutes left on the clock City were thrown a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty for handball. Unfortunately Danny Crow saw his shot comfortably saved by Rutterford, and with the Spurs' keeper foiling Crane late in the game it was a rather disappointing finale to City's Academy Season.

City line up: A.Osborne, Willis [Eagle 45], J.Osborne, Tyrie, Crane, Chick [Howell 45], Batt, Smith, Jarvis, Crow, Clarke.

Subs not used: Herbert, Gil.

Top Canary: Jake Osborne.

02.04.03 - TYRIE SIGNS IN

As announced on the club website this morning, Norwich report the signing of 18-year-old central defender David Tyrie on academy scholarship forms.
Norwich-born Tyrie has been released by former Club Tottenham Hotspur and will see out his Scholarship, due to finish at the end of next season, with the Canaries.
The signing comes after a trial period which has seen the new boy appear for both the Academy Under-19 side and the reserves.
