With four young players breaking into the first-team late last season everyone is talking about The Academy, but how much do you know about The Academy? Here is your chance to find out more.
In conjunction with Friends Of Norwich City Youth and The Gas Club, Academy Director Sammy Morgan will be giving an in depth talk into how The Academy works.

Colney was the venue on Sunday, when six Academy hopefuls were on hand to sign on the dotted line to become first year trainees at Norwich City. The six were in fact seven with Matthew Watts, who had impressed as a trialist at the end of last season, joining the Canaries as a second year trainee.

Joining the club after successfully coming through the schoolboy ranks were goalkeeper Shane Herbert, defenders Matthew Halliday and Jake Osborne, midfielders Robert Eagle and Lee Howlett and striker Josh Clarke.

The seven were joined by the rest of The Academy squad ahead of Monday's return to training.

2003/04 Academy Squad

Ready for pre-season training - The 2003/2004 Academy Under-19 Squad with coach Adrian Boothroyd

29.06.03 - REDS SET TO VISIT COLNEY

In their final pre-season friendly on Saturday August 16th [11am] City's Academy side are set to face Liverpool at Colney.
Last season Adrian Boothroyd's young side won their opening game of the season with a 2-1 victory on Merseyside, helped by the goal of the season from Captain Greg Crane.
To add to the games already announced against Dereham Town and Rushden and Diamonds there are two further games prior to the Lyngby Cup Tournament in Denmark. The first is against Colchester United on Saturday 19th July [11am] and the second is against Wolves on Thursday 24th July [1pm], both games being played at Colney. After they return from Scandanavia Adrian Boothroyd will take an Under-18 side across to Beccles where once again they will play in the Jack Constance Memorial Trophy (August 13th). The Academy season gets underway on Saturday 23rd. August. FONCY will have all the dates as soon as they become available.

26.06.03 - FRIENDLIES FOR THE NEW SEASON

The first details of friendlies for the coming season have filtered through to FONCY.

The Under-19s will make the short trip along the A47 to Dereham Town on Wednesday July 9th. Kick-off at Aldiss Park is 7.45 pm.

On the following Saturday July 12th, Rushden and Diamonds will bring an Under-19 side to Colney, the kick-off time still to be confirmed.

Why not try to get along to support the Academy as they prepare for the new season? Further friendlies are also being planned. As soon as we have firm dates, information will be made available here.

23.06.03 - YOUNG STRIKER IN DEMAND

As widely reported in the local press, Ian Henderson, who earlier this helped England to an Under-18 tournament win in Portugal, has now been selected for Scotland Under-19's who are playing in the Northern Ireland Milk Cup!

Hendo, with a Scottish father and an English mother, can keep his options open on which country he ends up playing for until he takes part in a competitive qualifying match for one of the countries. With the Northern Ireland Milk Cup tournament taking place in the middle of the Canaries' first team pre-season preparations, the young striker in any case has to decide together with Nigel Worthington whether it makes sense to have a break from the first team squad at such a crucial time.

23.06.03 - UNDER-15 MILK CUP DATES AND VENUES CONFIRMED

The dates and venues for Norwich Under-15s qualifying group games in the Northern Ireland Milk Cup have been announced. All games have a 12-noon kick-off and are as follows:

19 July v Cherry Orchard (Parker Avenue, Portrush)
21 July v Co.Down (The Warren, Portstewart)
22 July v Atlas (Rugby Avenue Stadium, Coleraine)

Depending on success in the qualifying round, the Canaries will go on to play for one of three trophies with the next game scheduled a day later on July 23rd.

19.06.03 - YOUNG ACADEMY KEEPER CALLED UP FOR ENGLAND

Young Norwich Academy Keeper Joe Lewis has been selected for the England Under-17 squad to play in an International Youth Tournament in Nottingham in July. Lewis moves up from Under-16 level having made several appearances for England in that age bracket last year.

The tournament, with all matches being played at Notts County's Meadow Lane, looks to be top quality with Brazil, Portugal and the USA being the other competing nations.

The complete programme:

Monday 7 July
17:30 Portugal v Brazil
20:00 England v USA

Thursday 10 July
17:30 Brazil v USA
20:00 England v Portugal

Sunday 13 July
12:30 Portugal v USA
15:00 England v Brazil

14.06.03 - UNDER-19 PRE-SEASON TOURNAMENT IN DENMARK

The season has hardly finished but already plans are well underway for the upcoming academy season. FONCY traditionally supports the academy in covering costs to allow the youngsters to participate in tournaments abroad and this year is no different. The Under-15 team will again be at the Northern Ireland Milk Cup (see news item below from 14.05.03). Now the programme for the Under-19 Tournament in Lyngby, Denmark - "The Lyngby Cup" - has been announced.

The Norwich Under-19 team will be in the Copenhagen suburb for the week of July 27th to August 2nd. The young canaries will face Halmstads BK and hosts Lyngby in group games on Tuesday 29th and Wednesday 30th July respectively. Two further final round games will be played on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd August. Other teams in the twelve team event include last year's winners Charlton Athletic, Heerenveen from the Netherlands, the Singapore national side and a range of Scandanavian clubs.

14.06.03 - WEBSITE AVAILABILITY

08.06.03 - HENDERSON LEADS ENGLAND TO TOURNAMENT WIN

Ian Henderson scored England's first goal in this morning's 2-0 victory against Spain, a win which secured the Lisbon International Tournament for England's Under-18 side. The young Norwich striker converted a cross from Lewis Guy in the first half, before Guy secured the victory in the 62nd minute. Today's second game saw Sweden beat Portugal 2-1 to finish third behind Spain, with the hosts last in the four team tournament.

Today's goal capped a fine tournament for Henderson after playing in all three England games and rounds off a very successful season for the Norwich Football Academy.

06.06.03 - HENDERSON PLAYS IN 0-0 DRAW WITH HOSTS

Ian Henderson again played the full game for England Under-18's this evening in the 0-0 draw against hosts Portugal in the Lisbon International Tournament. Henderson partnered Newcastle's Lewis Guy up front but England failed to breakdown the home defence in a game watched by around 200 spectators.

With Spain beating Sweden 6-1 in today's other match, England's final game on sunday morning (9.30 am!) against the Spaniards is effectively the tournament final, with the winner clinching the competition. A draw would see Spain ahead of England on goal difference.

06.06.03 - HENDERSON PLAYS FOR ENGLAND

We can report that Ian Henderson played the full game for England Under-18's yesterday as the Young Lions won their opening game in the Lisbon International U18 Tournament against Sweden 2-1. Henderson failed to make the scoresheet in front of a small crowd of around 150 as Lewis Guy (Newcastle United) and Cherno Samba (Millwall) scored before an injury-time consolation goal for the Swedes.

Yesterday's other game saw a 2-2 draw between Portugal and Spain.

Today England face Portugal, together undoubtedly with a bigger crowd. Their final game is then against Spain on Sunday in the four team competition. We will bring you further information as we get it.

02.06.03 - COMPETITION WINNER

Two entrants to our End of Season Competition correctly named all players in the team group from 1995. In a draw to decide the prize winner James Emerson of North Walsham was drawn out the FONCY Ryan Jarvis Coffe Mug first. Unlucky runner-up was Helen Lakey of Hethersett. Shelley Thomas of Norwich came in a creditable third with 10 out of 12 names right.

We will be contacting James soon with his prize and with a bit of luck the second and third places will be found a consolation prize too. The full solution to the competition will be posted on the Competitions Page in the next week.

Many thanks to all entrants, look out for more competitions in the future.
