26.09.06 - MATTHEWS HEADS IRELAND TO VICTORY Norwich's recent Academy recruit Gareth Matthews scored with a thumping header from a corner to help the Republic of Ireland to a 2-0 win over hosts Azerbaijan in their UEFA Under-17 qualifying group yesterday. Kurtis Byrne was also involved from the start of the match while the third Norwich player originally in the Irish squad, Kris Renton, has had to withdraw through injury. On Saturday Ireland drew their first game with Denmark 0-0. A draw with Latvia in their final group game on Thursday will see the Irish through to the second qualifying round next year which will hopefully be played a bit closer to home! |
