Now in his second year as a scholar, Joe is the latest in a long line of keepers to come through The Academy as he looks set to follow in the footsteps of Andy Marshall and of course City's latest number one Robert Green. At six feet seven inches, Joe is by far and away the tallest player at the club, and with that stature he certainly commands his penalty area. However with tall keepers you do find they are not so quick at getting down when the ball is played along the ground. Having watched Joe for a number of years I don't believe you can say that about him as he is as effective on the floor as he is in the air. Joe has a string of England caps to his name at various levels and former England keeper Ray Clemence, who is now England's goalkeeping coach, is from time to time at Colney for Academy games to keep tabs on Joe. David Williams believes that, like all keepers, Joe has to play a waiting game. "It is always difficult for keepers to make progress as there is only the one place available for them in the team. We all want Joe to make progress so we are hoping that he can get as many Reserve Team games under his belt as possible." It seems that Joe is also a keen cricketer, something I believe Robert Green can turn his hand to too. As far as Joe is concerned that ability with bat and ball might have taken him away from Norwich City to a career in county cricket after playing for Norfolk as a schoolboy and later for the Midlands at Under-14. Fortunately for The Canaries Joe's first love was always football and while Joe has to date only been an unused substitute for Norwich, I don't believe it will be too long before he shows the Carrow Road faithful what he is capable of.
