Shane Herbert

There have been times when outfielders have been called to pull on the keeper's jersey in times of crisis, I seem to remember Rob Newman coming to City's rescue some years ago. However there are not many occasions when the roles have been reversed.

Shane Herbert has however been called upon to play in an outfield position not once but twice.

The first came in an Academy game down at Southampton two seasons ago and then again last season for the Reserves at Derby when he came on to replace Matty Svennson who was on his way back from injury.

First and foremost however Shane is a goalkeeper in his third and final year as a scholar, and as you might imagine a very important year it is.

David Williams believes being a keeper is a real test of the individual's resolve as he explains.

"You only have to look at Darren Ward and Paul Gallacher who know that they have to keep going in training and hope that they will get the break to show what they can do if called upon. It is exactly the same for Shane. He must keep working hard with James Holman and just hope that his chance will come. That will not necessarily be with Norwich but while he continues to work hard the opportunity could come at any moment."

Shane was of course part of the Norwich Under-15 side that won the Northern Ireland Milk Cup back in 2001.

While most people associate that competition with the emergence of Ryan Jarvis following his extra time golden goal, if you have seen the video you will see that City were only kept in the competition by an outstanding save from Shane shortly before Ryan scored the goal that brought the trophy back to Norwich.
